Sophiana walked places like she expected a piano to fall from the sky on her at any moment. The paranoia made a fair amount of sense all things considered, but still it garnered odd looks from people on the street. Though the looks could be several things. One it could be the fact that she was a siren and her skin glimmered in the sunlight, not to mention the natural attraction all humans had to her It could also be her clothes, a mixture of human clothes and traditional siren’s clothes, but somehow slightly dingy and unkempt. Unlike how a siren would ever present herself.
It was also potentially her beauty that caught people’s eyes. Her long, thick black hair was braided intricately on her head and down her back. Her face was porcelain white and her eyes a striking blue. The look in her eyes was one of concern though, and it was an old expression that was deeply imbedded on her face. It was already showing traces in her skin, which was odd for a girl her age.
The cafe was near central park. She smoothed out her dress as she walked inside. A smile finally appeared on her face at it lit up the room, “Hello, Andrew.”
Andrew popped his head up from behind the counter. It was only the two of them at the cafe. She’d met him when she’d first arrived in New York after leaving LA. Incidentally he was the first person that the other Sophia went after only to discover that Andrew’s part demon heritage prevented him from being hypnotized and he smashed her over the head before she the other Sophia could retaliate.
They’d been friends ever since. He was a sweet man, ten years her senior with dark skin and a bald head. He dressed nicely, but it was clear that he was more focused on his business than his clothes. He was unmarried and she never saw him anyone else.
The cafe was empty and he smiled at her, “Hey Sophie. Incident free since…?”
She smiled and gave a relieved sigh, “Nothing since I saw you last. She’s being very evasive these days. Hopefully she doesn’t see anything she likes too much anytime soon. I’m loving getting sleep.”
Sophie went to doing her normal opening shift duties. She cleaned tables meticulously, singing as she did so. Andrew favored her voice over the radio and encouraged her to kill the silence in their mornings with her “angelic voice”. Sophie wouldn’t go so far as to call it that, but being a Siren made her like to sing so she obliged.
The morning was normal and it was quiet as they opened, the way a Sunday morning would be. At least it was a normal Sunday morning until he walked in. Sophie would argue the details but her definitely jaw dropped as soon as she saw him. She had no idea who he was or what he would mean, at the moment all she could think was:Oh great.Other Sophie is going to want this one.
She looked away from him quickly, “Hi, you can sit where ever you want. I’ll be right there.”
“Thank you”, James replied with a sincere tone of appreciation. Usually his voice was the definition of suave: a manly, burley, tone with a heavy Spanish accent. Spewing out pickup lines with so much ease and without a second a thought also helped make women swoon as soon as he opened his mouth. But today he was tired, and anyone who could hear or see him could tell, also he’s never thankful for anything, so something was obviously different. His clothes were worn and had smudges of dirt, hair was unwashed and untamed. He was typically unshaved, however he had a certain way in which he styled his facial hair but because of his journey James’ face was a bit more rugged.
James has been traveling across the country since he left the coliseum in L.A two weeks ago. After 30 years of battles without any luck of accomplishing his goal of death he decided it was time to find a new method to achieve this. After “saddling up his modern day pony” he started heading east to New York, stopping in different areas to see if there was any life threating jobs for him.
Before he took his seat he didn’t even notice where the voice had come from, even though in the past any female voice would immediately catch his attention. It wasn’t until he caught a quick glance out of the corner of his eye that he detected a pretty little figure coming toward him. “Hello there,” he tried to say in a flirtatious way while hiding his exhaustion. “I would love a cup of coffee please. Also could you possibly recommend a place I could stay for a few nights? Maybe you’d like to show a newcomer around the city?” The girls he usually met would easily fall into this trap of a line, so he thought it would be a done deal. But there was no answer, “Odd, this has never happened before. Well, I have never given up easily.” James thought as this stunning, mysterious woman walked away without any acknowledgement to his existence.
